Dhanteras Gifts and Celebrations in Nepal
Dhanteras, also known as Dhanatrayodashi, marks the first day of the Tihar celebration in Nepal and the festival of Diwali in India. "Dhan" means money or wealth, and "Teras" signifies the thirteenth day of Krishna Paksha (the dark aspect of Kartik month in the lunar calendar).
Dhanteras (धनतेरस) falls on Nov 10, 2023.
Significance of Dhanteras:
The Goddess of Wealth- Laxmi is worshipped on Dhanteras. It is believed that if you purchase gold, silver, gemstones, other valuable ornaments, and household metal products on this day, then you are effectively bringing Goddess Laxmi or wealth, happiness, and prosperity into your home for the days to come.
Dhanteras engages the themes of cleansing, renewal, and securing the auspiciousness in Laxmi.
- - Homes are thoroughly cleaned for the preparation of Tihar (Deepawali), and Lord Dhanvantari the god of health and Ayurveda (the physician of Gods), is worshipped in the evening.
- - The main entrance is decorated with holiday lights and colorful lanterns.
- - On the night of Dhanteras, diyos (lamps) are ritually kept burning all through the night in honor of Goddess Laxmi and Dhanvantari. People also set out electronic lamps & lights glowing over the walls of their houses.
There is also a tradition of buying or sending gifts for your brothers & sisters or family on this day for the Bhai Tika celebration, which is celebrated after 4 days of Dhanteras.
