Laxmi Puja Celebrations in Nepal
Tihar is one of the two Big and widely celebrated festivals in Nepal after Dashain which is celebrated in late Autumn. It has its unique ways of celebration.
There are various stories related to Laxmi puja and Tihar celebration. One of the most famous stories behind the celebration of Tihar is related to Yama, the god of death and his sister Yamuna.
Laxmi Puja falls on Nov 12, 2023.
On this day, Goddess Lakshmi is worshiped with the spiritual emotion (bhav) of happiness, peace & abundance (sukha, shanti, samridhi) and it is believed that the Goddess visits every house on the night of the Laxmi Puja and gives her blessings. So every houses in the Hindu communities perform the puja in order to impress the Goddess. In addition, Deity Kuber (treasurer of wealth) is also worshipped.
This day ‘Lakshmi-panchayatan’ enters the Universe. Shree Vishnu, Shree Laxmi, Shree Indra, Shree Gajendra , and Shree Kuber , a group of five are the elements of this ‘panchayatan.'
Shree Vishnu: Happiness and satisfaction
Shree Indra: Opulence (satisfaction due to wealth)
Shree Kuber: Wealth (one who gives away wealth)
Shree Gajendra: Carries the wealth
Shree Laxmi: Divine Energy that provides energy to all the above activities.
There is also the tradition of going houses in the evening singing songs asking for money & foods. Girls & kids go out in the neighborhood in groups to sing and dance on the traditional songs called Bhailo songs.
Cleanliness and beauty draws attention of Goddess Laxmi. However, She chooses to live in a house in which faithful, dutiful, merciful family live with love & harmony.
